Well. I was going to write an article detailing my love of playing retro games on current gen platforms, but for some reason, the words aren’t coming today. Instead of forcing it, and ending up like some pretentious bore (crap, I’ve achieved that already) I’m just going to post some videos of some fantastic homebrew projects that are in progress on the Nintendo DS right now. This very minute.
Okay, so first off, we have the fantastic CrocoDS. This is an Amstrad CPC 464 emulator made by a French gentlemen known to the homebrew community as Rebug. This guy is also working on 2 other emulators for the DS, including Styx, an Atari emulator. Back to CrocoDS, however, just let me explain one or two things. To get this application running on your DS, you’d need a few things – something, like say a Supercard SD, to run homebrew, and something that’d actually let you RUN the homebrew in the first place – in my case, it’s a flashed DS, or you could use something like a Superpass. There are more advanced technologies around now, like Slot 1 Supercards which don’t require a Superpass or a flashed DS (as far as I know) to play, but I’ll stick to what I know for now.
If you’ve already got these things, you’re in luck. Now all that you need is CrocoDS, and some Amstrad roms. For a little taster, see 2 videos below. One is of the absolute classics Sorcery + that I can not play to save my life (but god damn, can I pry the DS off my sister at the minute ‘cos she’s always playing it?) and a compilation of a couple of the classic Dizzy games which so shaped my youth. Yes, my youth was egg shaped.
I have a few more videos to come, but I’ll sign off for now.
